"Strigoiul din Medgidia a fost eliminat"
Telegraf, 11 September 2009
A 39-year-old gypsy woman called Ghiulten Memedali died of a heart attack in March 2008. She was buried in the Muslim cemetery of Medgidia. She did own some golden objects which she had once bought when she had been working in Italy. After her death, it would appear that her brother started tales that the ghost of his late sister had demanded that the gold should go to him. Her 20-year-old son, Daniel Ghica, said that it was just a trick to get the gold. Daniel slept in the house several times and never saw anything strange or scary. But tales about the dead returning from the grave are often taken quite serious in this part of the world.
Apparently a cow was thought to be possessed by the dead woman and consequently slaughtered. Then relatives of the deceased decided to dig up the body. But the corpse was buried again. After that they made continuous attempts to dig up the body, but they were stopped by the police. Then, in September 2009, the authorities decided to have another look at the corpse. They found that there was a hole in her chest and that the heart was missing.
The woman died in March 2008. The first (unauthorised) and second (official) exhumation took place in May 2008. Of the third (criminal) exhumation we have no details. And the fourth, official and hopefully final exhumation took place one in September 2009.
You can find Medgidia about 20 km West of Constanta, along the road to Bucharest.
This is an interesting case. For it is extremely recent. Please note, those among you who think that happenings like this are something of the past. You are wrong. These practices have been going on for ages, and those village people, despite the fact that they know that they may have to face criminal charges, simply do what they think is right.
Much more has been published about this case. Go find it. I must have said it before. Those local Romanian newspapers are a great source for stories like this. Go check them out !
