The Source:
John V.A. Fine, Jr. :
"In defense of Vampires"
in Alan Dunde's "The Vampire - A Casebook"
University of Wisconsin Press, USA, 1998
The Case:
In early 1820 Prince Milos got a message from the citizens of Ub asking permission to take care of a serious case of vampirism that had already made a number of victims. Permission was granted to inspect graves, as long as the corpses would be left in peace. But the people of Ub had not waited that long and had opened up some graves on their own authority. They had pierced one corpse with a stake and chopped off its head that was then placed at its feet.
The Date:
The events are reported to have taken place in 1820.
The Place:
Ub can be found in Serbia, SouthWest of the capital Belgrade.
Possible Follow-Up:
Read John V.A. Fine's interesting article in Alan Dunde's book. He offers you much more information than I do. Then try to unearth Djordjevic's original article which appears to have been published in the "Srpski Etnografski Zbornic".
