Adrien Cremene :
"Mythologie du Vampire en Roumanie"
Editions du Rocher, Monaco, 1981.
The Case:
In the Romanian part of Moldavia, in the region of Neamt, a sorcerer had been put into prison, accused of being a fraud. After a couple of years he died, still in prison. Unfortunately, it was decided that his corpse would not be brought back to the village where he had been born. It was buried somewhere else. It was said that the dead man came back every night to frighten the life out of the people who had sent him to prison. The local police as well as the vampire's own family. Not long after his death, around 1956, two of the vampire's children and three of his cousins all died of consumption, as well as a couple of others from the village, who were said to have been involved in his arrest.
The Date:
These things are said to have happened "around 1956", which should be exact enough for our purposes.
The Place:
Unfortunately we have not been given an exact location. The district of Neamt is an area with a size of 5890 sq. kilometer, which gives us a lot of ground to cover. However, there is a site called Neamt OnLine .
Personal Comments:
Actually, in a way, I do prefer cases like this, where we are given no more than a few details. They are so much more of a challenge than better documented cases.
Possible Follow-Up:
This does sound like the kind of story that must have made the local newspapers at the time. We should be able to find some records of the sorcerer's jail sentence, which would undoubtedly provide us with further particulars about the case. The district capital, Piatra Neamt (which is a nice enough place to stay) should be a good starting point for an investigation.
