"Un banatean a omorit o batrina pentru ca "arata ca un vampir, era tare urita si avea par pe fapta"
in: Evenementul Zilei Online, 7 January 2002.

The Case:

This then, more or less, is the story:

A 72-year-old woman, Veronica Stoicanescu, had been brought to a hospital in Timisoara after she had a cerebral attack. She was sent home to Herendesti as the doctors decided that nothing could save her life. Then she was found dead having been stabbed through the heart. The police was allerted and their investigation led to the arrest of a 36-year old man from Caras Severin. Apparently the family had hired him to help and look after the sick woman. But he declared to the police that he had thought the woman was a vampire and stabbed her heart with a knife in order to protect himself.

The Date:

We have been given a nice clear date: January 2002

The Place:

Herendesti can be found East, slightly to the South of Timisoara.

Possible Follow-Up:

I found these 2 articles about the case. Undoubtedly it will have had further coverage.
