The Sources:

Albert Hellwig :
"Verbrechen und Aberglaube"
Verlag Teubner, Leipzig, 1908

The Case:

In Abrudbanya an old woman had died, who according to the local people had been some kind of witch. The people were afraid that she might return as a vampire. So they put a pointed metal pin into the fire till it was redhot and pushed it into the woman's heart. They filled the mouth with pieces of iron and turned the corpse face down upon its belly. The authorities did not find out about these happenings until after the funeral. Those who were responsible were put on trial.

The Date:

The report dates back to the year of 1903.

The Place:

Abrud can be found in Romania, SouthWest of Cluj Napoca and NorthWest of Alba Julia.

Possible Follow-Up:

The village of Abrudbanya is located in Romania now. But where was it in 1903 ? Dive into your history books and try to find the answer. By all means, do read Hellwig's version of this case, and then see if you can think of other ways to learn more about this case.
