Peter Andreas :

"Im Totengarten - Porträts berümter Gräber" [1983]

LIT Verlag, Vienna & Berlin, 2011 - pp.284
ISBN: 978 3 643 50320 6

In 2009 the "Universität Wien" held a "Konferenz" with the theme "Vampyrismus und magia posthuma im Diskurs der Habsburgermonarchie im 18. und 19. Jahrhundert". Various experts submitted and presented interesting papers on subjects relevant to the theme. Lucky for us, these papers have now been bundled and published.

Hanns Bächtold-Stäubli & Eduard Hoffmann-Krayer (Ed.) :

"Handwörterbuch des deutschen Aberglaubens" [1927]

Walter de Gruyter, Berlin, Germany, 2000 - 10 volumes
ISBN 3 11 016860 X

An absolutely brilliant set of massive and extremely informative books that cover, in alphabetical order, each and every aspect of superstition and popular belief for those countries where German is the language. I am ever so glad that someone has had the good thought to reprint this rare and hard to get masterpiece.

Paul G. Bahn :

"Gräber, Mumien und Gelehrte - Auf Spurensuche mit Archäologen" [1996]

Orbis Verlag, München, Germany, 2002 - pp.214
ISBN: 3 572 01362 3

ISBN: 3 8258 9273 5

Fatos Baxhaku & Karl Kaser :

"Die Stammesgesellschaften Nordalbaniens - Berichte und Forschungen österreichischer Konsuln und Gelehrter (1861-1917)" [1996]

Böhlau Verlag, Vienna, Austria, 1996 - pp.460
ISBN: 3 205 98470 6

Johann Richard Beecken (ed.) :

"Die heilige Magie des Abramelin" [1957]

Verlag Richard Schikowski, Berlin, Germany, 1957 - pp.184

Another Abramelin book. Five small pages filled with large print by way of introduction. Plus a different version of the book itself. Of course it is always interesting to find another version for my collection. But I can not honestly say that this is my favourite edition.

Herbert Begemann (ed.) :

"Klinische Hämatologie" [1970]

Georg Thieme Verlag, Stuttgart, Germany, 1975 - pp.888
ISBN: 3 13 447202 3

Older books like this may no longer be up to date. Which often means that you can pick them up for a friendly price. If you are a hematology specialist, you obviously need the latest version of everything. But if you just need to know some of the basics about blood, there will be more than enough to satisfy your needs in a massive book like this.

Herbert Begemann & Hans-Günther Harwerth :

"Praktische Hämatologie" [1959]

Georg Thieme Verlag, Stuttgart, Germany, 1969 - pp.386
ISBN: 3 13 306205 0

Jasna Belovic :

"Die Sitten der Südslawen" [1927]

Paul Aretz Verlag, Dresden, Germany, 1927 - pp.320

Fascinating book with lots of interesting information and illustrations.

Mark Benecke (& others):

"Vampire unter uns ! (Band I)" [2009]

Edition Roter Drache, Rudolstadt, Germany, 2010 - pp.120
ISBN: 978 3 939459 24 8

A little bit of this, a little bit of that, but mainly concentrating on the vampire scene and the"Transylvanian Society of Dracula" in particular.

Mark & Lydia Benecke:

"Vampire unter uns ! (Band II)" [2010]

Edition Roter Drache, Rudolstadt, Germany, 2010 - pp.158
ISBN: 978 3 939459 42 2

Misled by the Benecke name I had been hoping for some corpse related material. But it is living vampires wherever we go. And preciously little about "our kind of vampire".

Kurt Benesch (ed.) :

"Magie der Renaissance" [1985]

Fourier Verlag, Wiesbaden, Germany, 1985 - pp.504
ISBN: 3-921695 91 0

Remarkable mix of works by Petrus von Abano, Georg Pictorius aus Vilingen, Plinius Secundus, Gerhard von Cremona, Arbatel and Johannes Tritheim, some of which is not without interest.

Luise Bernhardi :

"Die Geisterwelt [no date]

Ubooks Verlag, Diest, Germany, 2008 - pp.400
ISBN: 978 3 86608 086 7

Apparently this is a 19th Century book that has been edited by Nicolaus Equiamicus.

Albert J. Bernstein :

"Emotionale Vampire" [2001]

mvg Verlag, Frankfurt, Germany, 2004 - pp.330
ISBN: 3 478 08388 5

German translation of Bernstein's "Emotional Vampires".

O. Böckel :

"Die Totenklage bei den Germanen" [1920]

in: "Bilder aus der Volkskunde" [1920]
Verlag Moritz Diesterweg, Frankfurt am Main, Germany, 1920 - pp.288

Norbert Borrmann :

"Vampirismus - oder die Sehnsucht nach Unsterblichkeit" [1998]

Diederichs, München, Germany, 2000 - pp.366
ISBN: 3 424 01351

This nice hardbound book was published at such a ridiculously low price that I was afraid that the quality of its contents would be of the same low level. I was wrong. Norbert Borrmann presents us with an interesting overview of Vampirism in which most vampire aspects seem to get a mention.

Krzysztof Bracha :

"Magie und Aberglaubenskritik in den Predigten des Spätmittelalters in Polen"

in: Wünsch (ed.): "Religion und Magie in Ostmitteleuropa" [2006]
LIT Verlag, Berlin, Germany, 2006 - pp.340
ISBN: 3 8258 9273 5

James M. Bradburne (ed.) :

"Blut - Kunst Macht Politik Pathologie" [2001]

Prestel, München, Germany, 2001 - pp.272
ISBN: 3 7913 2599 X

This book was published alongside a remarkable exhibition that could be visited in Frankfurt in 2001/2002. Apart from a wealth of illustrations, there is a number of interesting articles by various experts.

Karl Brunner :

"Ostdeutsche Volkskunde" [1925]

Verlag Wolfgang Weidlich, Frankfurt am Main, Germany, 1979 - pp.280
ISBN: 3 8035 1011 2

Ralf Busch, Torsten Capelle & Friedrich Laux :

"Opferplatz und Heiligtum - Kult der Vorzeit in Norddeutschland" [2000]

Wachholtz Verlag, Neumüntser, Germany, 2000 - pp.256
ISBN: 3 529 02010 9

Comprehensive survey of sacred places and places of sacrifice. As a bonus, there is an interesting chapter about "Moorleichen".

Georg Buschan [ed.] :

"Das Deutsche Volk in Sitte und Brauch" [1922]

Union Deutsche Verlagsgesellschaft, Berlin, Germany, 1922 - pp.462

Large and very entertaining book with lots of interesting photos and illustrations, and chapters by various hands. The most interesting part being Georg Buschan's own article on "Allerlei Aberglaube".

Dom Augustin Calmet [1672-1757] :

"Des hochwürdigen Herrn Augustini Calmet, Abt zu Senon, Ord.S.Bened., Gelehrte Verhandlung von denen sogenannten Vampiren oder zurückkommenden Verstorbenen in Ungarn, Mähren etc." [1751]

Merlin verlag, Hamburg, Germany, 1976 - pp.242

A German translation of Calmet's 2nd book. It also includes an interesting piece by Wolfgang Bauer: "Von denen Traktaten - die historischen Vampirschriften und ihre Verfasser".

"Gelehrte Verhandlung der Materie von den Erscheinungen der Geister, und der Vampire in Ungarn und Mähren." [1749]

Edition Roter Drache, Rudolstadt, Germany, 2006 - pp.318
ISBN: 978 3 939459 03 3

Another much more interesting German translation of both of Calmet's vampire books. With lots of interesting notes and other things to keep us happy. If you need a German version, I can recommend this one.

D. Paulus Cassel :

"Die Symbolik des Blutes" [1882]

Edition Geheimes Wissen, Austria, 2007 - pp.158

Another great reprint from this publisher. The original book is very hard to find, but much too interesting to be forgotten.

Oliver Claes :

"Fremde. Vampire. - Sexualität, Tod und Kunst bei Elfriede Jelinek und Adolf Musch" [1994]

Aisthesis Verlag, Bielefeld, Germany, 1994 - pp.204
ISBN: 3 89528 109 3

Cogitus :

"Blicke in die Traum- und Geisterwelt" [no date]

Prana Verlag, Pfullingen, Germany, no date - pp.62

Not easy to put a date on this small book, but judging by its state and style I'd guess that it might date back to around 1900 or so.

Felix Dahn :

"Die Goten - Ostgermanen - die Völker der Gotischen Gruppe" [1899]

Emill Vollmer Verlag, Germany, no date - pp.544
ISBN: 3 88851 180 1

LIT Verlag, Berlin, Germany, 2006 - pp.340
ISBN: 3 8258 9273 5

Edition Araki, Leipzig, Germany, 1995 - pp.512
ISBN: 3 89060 408 0

"Buch Abramelin - das ist Die egyptischen grossen Offenbarungen oder des Abraham von Worms Buch der wahren Praktik in der uralten Göttlichen Magie" [2001]

Edition Araki, Leipzig, Germany, 2001 - pp.416
ISBN: 3 936149 00 3

Georg Dehn's most recent editions of the Abramelin book are without a doubt superior to everything else that has ever been published on the subject. By translating and comparing all the different original manuscripts that are known to us, he has come up with the ultimate reconstruction of the Abramelin text. Not satisfied with that, he has travelled to Egypt to find the place where Abraham of Worms came into touch with the mysterious Abramelin. With plenty of photographic copies of pages from the original manuscripts and Georg Dehn's brilliant comments, this is without a doubt the very best Abramelin book that I have ever read. The American edition can be ordered through Amazon. The German book can be ordered through  WWW.AMAZON.DE  or in case you prefer to order it straight from the publishers :  WWW.ARAKI.DE

A. Dieterich :

"Volksglaube und Aberglaube der Ungarn" [1981]

Corvina Kiadó, Budapest, Hungary, 1982 - pp.308

The best book that I have ever seen on this particular subject.

Ingeborg Drewitz :

Rohwolt Taschenbuch Verlag, Reinbek, Germany, 1995 - pp.408
ISBN: 3 499 35154 4

Josef Dürr :

ISBN: 978 3 902646 45 3

Verlag Herder, Freiburg im Breisgau, Germany, 2002 - pp.496
ISBN: 3 451 05274 1

Mircea Eliade's masterpiece hardly needs any recommendation. But I will give you my opinion anyway. I honestly think that anyone who has the slightest interest in mythology and the history of religious ideas should read these books. Like myself, you may be put off by the fact that these are 4 massive volumes. But once I started reading, I simply could not stop. These fascinating and informative books (which are also available in other languages) are absolutely brilliant.

"Die Religionen und das Heilige - Elemente der Religionsgeschichte" [1949]

Insel Verlag, Frankfurt, Germany, 1998 - pp.574
ISBN: 3 458 33887 X

Another masterpiece from the hand of Eliade. Written from a different angle. This time it is not the historical development of religious ideas, but a comprehensive overview of all the different elements that make up a "religion".

Mircea Eliade & Ioan P. Culianu :

"Handbuch der Religionen" [1990]

Suhrkamp Taschenbuch Verlag, Germany, 1995 - pp.366
ISBN: 3 518 38886 X

And in case it happens that you do not have the time or the stomach to work your way through the whole of Eliade's "History of Religious Thought", then this might be just the book for you. It is a great and useful book.

Herder & Co, Wien, Austria, 1993 - pp.350
ISBN: 3 210 25151 7

Interesting and brilliantly illustrated book, which I bought at the end of one of my visits to the lugubrious "Kaisergruft" of Vienna. Just imagine how those royal corpses have been mistreated. Their hearts cut out to be "buried" in one particular church. Their innards taken out to end up in the basement of another church. And then, what's left, being buried in a dismal gloomy place like the Kaisergruft, in one of those monstrous black metal containers...

Facultas Universitätsverlag, Wien, Austria, 2002 - pp.178
ISBN: 3 85076 575 X

To me (but who am I ?) this book seems to be a pretty good introduction to Forensic Medicine. Especially the first chapter about "Leichenveränderungen" should be of interest to any serious vampirologist.

Verlag Carl Ueberreuter, Vienna, Austria, 2004 - pp.208
ISBN: 3 8000 3922 2

Informative book that gives plenty of unpleasant reading, which may not be surprising in view of the subject.

Outstanding study about the old vampire belief in Germany. According to the author, a work still in progress which at this moment is available as a print-out of the manuscript or as a PDF file on CD. If you do read German, make sure that you don't miss this one. Highly recommended !

"Von denen Vampiren oder Menschensaugern - Dichtungen und Dokumente" [1968]

Carl Hanser Verlag, München, Germany, 1973 - pp.610

Although a substantial part of the book is filled with fiction, there are a lot of good things to be found in there. The section titled "Dokumente" contains much valuable material. The essay "Historischer Bericht" by Klaus Völker is also quite interesting. It may be worth mentioning that there have been later editions where the fiction was published seperate from the more interesting non-fiction material.

In Phlegon's book, which was written in the first part of the 2nd Century, we can find the famous classic vampire story of Philinnion and Machates, which is said to be based on true events. I am terribly pleased to have found this magnificent edition. Introduced and translated by Kai Brodersen, it brings you the original Greek text (or rather what is left of it) next to a German translation.

Friedhelm Werremeier :

"Haarmann - Der Schlächter von Hannover" [1992]

Heyne, München, Germany, 1995 - pp.218
ISBN: 3 453 08907 3

This is a real good book if you happen to be interested in the weird case of serial killer Fritz Haarmann, "The Vampire of Hannover". Plenty of fascinating facts in there. The illustrations by themselves would be well worth the price of the book.

Laurenz Wiedner [ed.]:

Edited selection of some interesting bits and pieces from "Die christliche Mystik" by Joseph von Görres.

ISBN: 3 9800257 0 5

This work is like a regular Encyclopedia. There is such an amazing wealth of information like I have never seen in any of the other books that I have read on the subject. I have to hand it to those Germans, once they have got their teeth into something, they don't let go until it is completely finished. This is a brilliant book !

LIT Verlag, Berlin, Germany, 2006 - pp.340
ISBN: 3 8258 9273 5

Very interesting anthology with many fascinating articles, some of them in English. The only thing that I could possibly find wrong with it is the lack of an index, but that - sadly - is something that is usually missing in this type of publication. Otherwise, it is an absolutely brilliant book.

Robert Wuttke (ed.) :
